GetRatesAPI Developer Documentation
GetRatesAPI gives developers a single, provider-agnostic HTTP API for currency exchange rate data, plus a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server exposing the same data and a few extra tools (currency conversion, asset listings, usage) to MCP-capable clients.
This site documents:
- the REST API — rates, conversion and the asset catalog, plus account, usage, plans and billing,
- the hosted MCP server —
get_rate,convert_currency,list_fiat_currencies,list_crypto_assets,get_usage.
Quick start
-
Register an account.
curl -X POST https://your-getratesapi-host/v1/auth/register \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -d '{"email":"[email protected]","password":"a-strong-password"}' -
Log in to obtain a session token.
curl -X POST https://your-getratesapi-host/v1/auth/login \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -d '{"email":"[email protected]","password":"a-strong-password"}'Response:
{ "session_token": "gra_sess_0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000", "expires_at": "2026-10-09T12:00:00Z" } -
Create an API key using the session token (see Authentication / API keys for the full flow).
-
Call the rate endpoint using the API key:
curl https://your-getratesapi-host/v1/rates/EUR/USD \ -H "Authorization: ApiKey gra_live_0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000"or call the equivalent
get_rateMCP tool from an MCP client.
What this site covers
| Area | Where |
|---|---|
| Authentication / API keys | /authentication |
| REST API overview, rates, conversion, assets, usage & quotas, errors | /rest |
| Plans, pricing and payments (one-time and subscription) | /rest/billing |
| MCP overview, hosted setup, and all 5 tools | /mcp |
Conversion and asset listing are available both over REST
(/v1/convert, /v1/assets) and as MCP
tools (convert_currency, list_fiat_currencies, list_crypto_assets).
Most developers never need the raw API for account management — the
customer portal covers API keys, usage charts, plan changes and invoices.
This is a local development instance in this milestone — there is no
production docs.getratesapi.com/api.getratesapi.com deployment yet. Use
your own local host/port wherever this site shows
